The roots of the franchise can be traced back to 1957 when they were known as the Tampa Tarpons, a team in the Florida State League. During that time, the Florida State League was considered a Class D minor league. The Tarpons played all their home games at Al Lopez Field, which was constructed in 1955 and was located at the present site of Raymond James Stadium.
