About Google Chat

Google Chat, formerly known as Hangouts Chat, is a communication service developed by Google. While originally designed for team and business use, it has now been expanded to cater to general consumers as well. This versatile platform offers features such as direct messaging, group conversations, and spaces, which allow users to create tasks, assign them, share files, and chat in a centralized location. Access to Google Chat is available through its dedicated website and app, as well as through the Gmail website and app. The service was initially launched on March 9, 2017, as part of Google's plan to replace Google Hangouts with two separate apps, the other being Google Meet. On April 9, 2020, it was rebranded as Google Chat. Initially, it was exclusively available for Google Workspace customers. However, in February 2021, Google started offering early access to Google Chat for regular consumer accounts, eventually making it fully available in April 2021. As of November 1, 2022, Google deprecated the original Hangouts service and replaced it with Google Chat.
