About Nintendo Company
Nintendo Company is a Japanese video game development and publishing company. It was founded on September 23, 1889, by Fusajiro Yamauchi, as a playing card company. The company produced its first product in 1963.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Nintendo was one of the biggest manufactures of home video game consoles, with rivals Sega and Atari. In 1994, due to poor sales and lower revenues from recycling cards instead of making new ones, Yamauchi announced that Nintendo would be entering a different market; video games. During this time the company was selling around fifty-nine million cards a year.
It was announced that Nintendo would release the home video game console called the Nintendo Entertainment System, which was released in Japan on July 15, 1983, and later in North America on October 18, 1985. The system got off to a slow start but it caught on towards the end of its life span. It was also one of the first consoles to have a wireless controller.
Nintendo released its Super Famicom console in Japan on November 21, 1990, and it was later released in September 1991 for North America. Nintendo then partnered with Sony to make the compact disc add-on called the Play Station but later dropped this idea when they saw that there was no real money in it. Nintendo also worked with Philips to make the CD-i, which ended up being their worst idea ever that lost them millions of dollars.
Gaming System of Nintendo
Nintendo then focused again on making game systems and released the handheld game called the Game Boy Pocket in 1996, an upgraded version of its original system, which sold forty-three million units worldwide. They later released the Game Boy Color in 1998, it was an upgraded version of its predecessor. Nintendo also made a bigger move to the home video game system market when they released their Super Nintendo Entertainment System on August 23, 1991, in Japan and then released July 29, 1992, for North America. It sold 49.10 million units worldwide making it one of the most sold video game consoles ever.
Nintendo’s next home console was called the Nintendo 64 and it was released on June 23, 1996, for Japan and September 29, 1996, in North America. It sold 32.93 million units worldwide making it second of the most sold home video game systems by Nintendo.
Nintendo released their seventh home console called the Wii on November 19, 2006, and it was later released in Japan on December 2, 2006, and in North America on November 19, 2006. The Wii sold a hundred and fifty-four million units worldwide making it Nintendo’s third most sold home video game system. During this time Nintendo also made their first move to the mobile phone market when they released mobile versions of its best-selling games like Super Mario Bros. for cell phones.
Nintendo then released the Nintendo 3DS on February 26, 2011, for Japan and March 27, 2011, in North America. It was later released in Europe on March 25, 2011. The Nintendo 3DS is their second most sold handheld game system selling seventy-nine million units worldwide.
Their next home console is called the Wii U which was released in North America on November 18, 2012, and later in Europe on November 30, 2012. Nintendo’s latest handheld game system is called the Nintendo 2DS which was released on October 12, 2013, in North America and September 15, 2013, in Europe.
