Evolution of Princeton University Logo

The college was meant to preach religion and basic education. The church lost trust in the ways of the college and parted their ways, making the college standalone but the college couldn’t let go of the traditional teaching methods of the church until 1910. The Princeton University logo changed in the following ways.

1748

In this year, the logo is a circle with a grey outline followed by while inline. After it, there is a wider layer of grey circle followed by a white layer of circle with text. The text says ‘COLLEGEII NEO – CAESARIENSIS – IV AMERICA * SIGLLVM.*’. After it, there is a grey layer of circle with a thin white inline and after it, there is the last layer of circle with grey filling. In this part, the circle seems to be divided in two parts. The first part has a ribbon white ribbon with grey text that says ‘VITAM * MORTUIS * REDDO’. Below it, there is an opened book in white color and has a text that says ‘VETON TESTAM ENTUM’, three of these words are on top of each other. On the second part of the circle, there seems to be a division; on the left side, there is a diploma and on the right side, there is a table with books. 1896

In this year, the logo is still a circle with a black outline, followed by a white inline and after it there is another black inline. There is a wide white layer of circle which has text that says ‘PRINCETONIENSIS * SIGILLVM .  VNIVERSITATIS .’. After this, there is a thin black layer of circle which has a white inline and after this, there is another layer of circle in black. After it, there is the last layer of circle which has a shield in black and orange color. The first part is black in color and has the opened book in white color with same text in it. The second part of the shield has orange color with a black sharp-edged line. Outside on the right side of the shield, there is a text that says ‘DEI SVB NVMINE’ and on the right side, there is a word ‘VIGET’. The nested circle has gone and there is the shield with the same book and same colors and outside the shield on the left, Princeton is written on top of University. Both the letters are capitalized.
