The platform was unveiled during the Google I/O keynote on May 11, 2022, and its rollout commenced on July 18 of the same year for Android smartphones. Notably, it coexists alongside the 2020 version of the Google Pay app. It is important to note that the brand name "Google Black Wallet" initially denoted the company's mobile payment system introduced in 2011. However, it later merged with Android Pay, resulting in the creation of a new application called Google Pay in 2018. The previous incarnation of the Black Wallet app, which transformed into a peer-to-peer payments service, underwent a name change to Google Pay Send before being ultimately discontinued in 2020.
